How to Read a Career Match Score (Without Over-Trusting It)

Read a career match score by checking three things first: how much of the aptitude profile it's based on (coverage), whether the trait breakdown underneath it actually matches your child's real strengths, and whether it's treated as a starting point rather than a verdict on your child's future.
Look at coverage before you look at the score
A 78% match built on a full aptitude profile means something different from a 78% match built on a fraction of the traits that career actually draws on. Always check how much of the profile the score is drawing from before treating it as confident.

In practice, this means resisting the urge to compare two match scores as if they're on the same scale unless you've also checked that they're drawing on comparably complete evidence. A 65% match with high coverage is a more trustworthy number than an 80% match with low coverage — even though the second one looks more impressive at a glance.
Where does the underlying data actually come from?
A match score is built from two ingredients: a set of measured traits (from an aptitude or interest instrument) and a set of trait requirements for a given career (how much each trait actually matters for that field, based on what the work involves). The score is essentially a comparison between those two profiles — how closely the child's measured strengths line up with what the field draws on. A lower score on a career your child is genuinely curious about isn't a disqualification — it's information about which strengths would need to develop, and how much runway there is to develop them. A 13-year-old with a moderate score and years of runway is in a completely different position than a 22-year-old making a final decision — treat the number as a snapshot of today's evidence, not a lifetime cap.
How to talk to your child about a lower score
The instinct to hide a discouraging number from a curious kid is understandable but usually backfires — kids tend to sense when something's being softened, and that erodes trust in the whole process. Second, shape: the breakdown shows strong scores on investigative interest and analytical reasoning, but a moderate score on a trait tied to fieldwork tolerance for physically demanding, outdoor conditions — a detail the headline number alone would have hidden entirely.
That single detail changes the conversation. Instead of treating 71% as a simple green light, Nora's parents suggest a summer program with real outdoor fieldwork components, specifically to pressure-test the one trait the breakdown flagged as uncertain. If she comes back energized rather than drained, that's a strong, specific update. If she comes back clearly preferring the lab-based parts of the program, that's just as useful — it doesn't rule out environmental science, but it suggests a lab-focused specialization within the field over a fieldwork-heavy one. Either outcome is more useful than the original 71% on its own.
Why you'll sometimes see no score at all
An honest system will occasionally show an empty state instead of a number — no aptitude data yet, or too little to responsibly compute anything. That's not a bug, and it's worth treating it as more trustworthy, not less, than a system that always produces a confident-looking percentage no matter what. A tool willing to say "we don't know yet" is a tool that isn't quietly filling gaps with an invented average just to keep the interface looking complete.
This shows up most often for a career that draws on a trait the family's aptitude data hasn't touched at all — a brand-new interest area, or a field the child hasn't been tested against yet. The fix isn't to distrust the tool; it's to take the aptitude test again with that field in mind, or to recognize that some fields will need a fuller profile before they can be scored responsibly. A missing score is information too — it tells you exactly where the evidence gap is.
When to retake the underlying test
There's no fixed schedule that fits every family, but a few natural triggers are more reliable than a calendar reminder: after a summer or activity specifically chosen to pressure-test a trait, after a noticeable shift in a child's stated interests, or after roughly a year of normal development for a younger child, whose traits are still moving quickly. Retaking more often than that rarely adds new signal — the underlying traits don't usually shift meaningfully month to month.
How scores should change over time
A match score that never moves is more suspicious than reassuring — it usually means the underlying test hasn't been retaken, not that a child's fit for a field is genuinely static. Expect scores to shift as a child develops new skills, as interests sharpen, and as the underlying aptitude data gets more complete through retesting.
